What equals a pound?


Most of us know that it’s not hard to put on 1 pound (lb) of weight. In order to gain 1 lb, we must consume 3,500 calories more than we expend during normal metabolism and activity. Similarly, in order to lose 1 lb, we need to take in 3,500 calories less or we need to burn it off.[1] So what does 3,500 calories look like? The following may surprise you.
What does 3,500 cal look like?
- 6 portions of homemade chicken pot pie, one piece= ½ 9” pie
- 6 large cheeseburgers
- 7 hot roast beef and cheese sandwiches (fast food style)
- 8 slices of cheesecake (slice =1/12 of 9” pie)
- 8 cups of homemade chicken salad
- 9 servings French-Fries (1 serving = 10 fries)
- 10 cups of vanilla ice cream
- 10, 10oz chocolate milk shakes
- 12, 2.16oz Snickers candy bars
- 14 yeast glazed doughnuts
- 15, 1cup servings of frozen yogurt
- 16 cups long grain rice
- 18 cake doughnuts
- 19 slices pepperoni pizza (slice = 1/8 of 12” pie)
- 21oz dry roasted almonds
- 22 cups of whole milk
- 24, 8 oz glasses of red wine
- 24, 12 oz regular beers
- 31 oz of cheddar cheese
- 34 cups dry corn flakes
- 35, 8 oz glasses of Kool-Aid
- 37 tablespoons peanut butter
- 44 Oreo cookies
- 50 eggs
- 69 cups watermelon
- 71 oz skinless chicken breast
- 80 cups boiled broccoli
- 95 medium peaches[2]
In order to burn 3,500 cal a 150# person would have to:
- Bicycle vigorously for 4.6 hours
- Golf (carrying clubs) for 8.8 hours
- Jump Rope for 4.8 hours
- Run (11.5 min/mile) for 5.4 hours
- Run (7 min/mile) for 3.3 hours
- Walk (15 min/mile) for 10.8 hours
- Operate Snow Blower (walking) for 10.8 hours
- Rake Lawn for 12 hours
- Garden (general) for 10.8 hours
- Clean House for 13.8 hours[3]
